FAQ’s – Repellants

Yes, repellents do not stain or damage most decks or patios. To be certain no staining occurs, test the product on a small area in an inconspicuous spot, by spraying liquid repellent thoroughly until the product runs-off. After testing, if structure staining occurred, try to use only as a perimeter treatment using a granular repellent or liquid without direct contact to that structure.

No. Do not apply directly to vegetable plants intended for human consumption. You can apply a barrier to the areas around your vegetable garden and plants. Not all repellents are labeled for use on Vegetables so read the directions carefully before applying. Bonide’s Go Away! Deer and Rabbit Repellent Ready to Use is labeled for use on vegetables.

For ornamental plants, use Shot Gun Repels All, available in both a liquid and granular form and for edibles use Go Away Deer & Rabbit Repellent Liquid or Hot Pepper Wax Animal Repellent.

The product is called No Escape Mouse Magic. It is made from natural ingredients that trigger escape and avoidance behaviors in mice. It is packaged in convenient “scent packs” that resemble tea bags. These “scent packs” can be placed at strategic locations where mice like to enter dwellings.

Animals can build up immunity to a particular repellent, especially as the populations increase and the food sources become scarcer. It is recommended that you try alternating between different repellents you are using, like Repels-All and MoleMax or Hot Pepper Wax and Go Away Deer and Rabbit Repellent.

Molemax can be used around the perimeter of a vegetable garden, but not in the vegetable garden.

Apart from building a fence around the areas in question, you may have to experiment a little until you find something that works. Bonide has several products including Go Away Rabbit Dog & Cat Repellent, and Shotgun Repels-All that could be used around the areas. Using the products in conjunction with other behavior modification techniques should help. You might also want to check with the local authorities and/or neighborhood association, as in some areas it is illegal to allow pets to roam.

Bonide makes many repellents that list squirrels on the label, try the following products as the correct one will depend on the situation. Hot Pepper Wax Animal Repellent, MoleMax and Repels All. Most squirrels that are forging, scare or startle easy. Squirrels tend to avoid predators. Sometimes keeping a dog or cat outdoors is enough to keep squirrels away. Motion sensing lights or sprinklers spook squirrels that activate them, discouraging the animals from coming back to taste items in a garden. An old school way is to keep squirrels away from your garden by creating a feast just for them in an area of your yard well away from the plants you want to protect.

I would recommend using Bonide’s Molemax or Shot Gun Repels All Granules or Ready to Spray products if you want to repel them. For killing the moles, consider Moletox Mole Killer Gel, Moletox Mole & Gopher Killer or Mole Traps.
